Meaning of P0401

P0401 stands for “Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected”. The engine control unit has commanded EGR, but does not detect the expected amount of exhaust gas flow or system response.

Exhaust gas recirculation routes a controlled portion of the exhaust gas back into the intake tract, primarily reducing nitrogen oxide formation. P0401 is therefore an emissions-related diagnostic trouble code.

P0401 does not automatically mean “EGR valve defective”. The valve may function while carbon-clogged passages restrict the actual gas flow. Pressure, position, air-mass or vacuum signals may also play a role.

For the workshop, this delayed recurrence is important: a code that does not return immediately after clearing does not prove a successful repair. What matters is whether the relevant monitor has completed its full test cycle.
